Nothing in your home changed on February 4, 2024. The walls stayed where they were, the door still faced the same street, the kitchen stayed in the kitchen. What changed, in the feng shui tradition, was the clock.
Chinese metaphysics divides time into twenty-year periods, and on that February day the period turned from the eighth to the ninth. Star 8, an earth star that had ruled since 2004, stepped down. Star 9, a fire star, took the seat. The ruling trigram changed from Gen, the mountain, to Li, the flame. The favored direction moved from the northeast to the south. Every natal chart drawn for a building is read against the current period, so every chart in the tradition is now read a little differently than it was two years ago.
This guide is about that time layer. Not your floor plan, not your birth chart, but the twenty-year weather every chart sits inside. It lays out the nine-period cycle that produced this turn, what the Fire period means in the traditional symbolism, which stars count as timely now, the period own mountain-water rule, and how to check your own home against it. As with everything on this site, it is presented the way teachers describe the system: cultural practice, not prediction, and not a promise about any household.
The twenty-year clock
The system is called San Yuan Jiu Yun in Chinese, the Three Yuan and Nine Periods. Time is cut into twenty-year blocks called Yun, usually translated as periods. Nine periods make one grand cycle of 180 years. The grand cycle itself splits into three sixty-year Yuan: the Upper Yuan (periods 1 to 3), the Middle Yuan (periods 4 to 6), and the Lower Yuan (periods 7 to 9). We are living in the Lower Yuan, and in its final period.
Each period is ruled by one of the nine flying stars, and each star carries an element, a trigram, and a direction from the Later Heaven bagua arrangement. The full table, as given on the English Wikipedia Flying Star Feng Shui page (read for this guide), runs:
| Period | Years | Ruling star | Element | Trigram | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1864-1883 | 1 White | Water | Kan | North |
| 2 | 1884-1903 | 2 Black | Earth | Kun | Southwest |
| 3 | 1904-1923 | 3 Jade | Wood | Zhen | East |
| 4 | 1924-1943 | 4 Green | Wood | Xun | Southeast |
| 5 | 1944-1963 | 5 Yellow | Earth | (center) | Center |
| 6 | 1964-1983 | 6 White | Metal | Qian | Northwest |
| 7 | 1984-2003 | 7 Red | Metal | Dui | West |
| 8 | 2004-2023 | 8 White | Earth | Gen | Northeast |
| 9 | 2024-2043 | 9 Purple | Fire | Li | South |
Two things about this table do most of the work. First, the periods turn on the solar calendar, at Li Chun, the start of spring term, which falls around February 4. The Flying Stars guide on this site explains why that date and not January 1 or Lunar New Year governs the system. A building finished in January 2024 is a Period 8 building; one finished a month later is Period 9. The boundary is a day, not a year.
Second, the grand cycle ends. After Period 9 closes at the Li Chun of 2044, the wheel resets to Period 1 and a new 180-year cycle begins (2044-2063 as the new Period 1, in the standard counting). Period 9 is therefore read in the tradition as a completion phase: the last twenty years of a cycle that began in 1864. Teachers describe it as a time when things come to a head and show themselves, which is part of why the Fire symbolism fits it so well.
The handover: what changed when Period 8 ended
For twenty years, from 2004 to 2023, the tradition read star 8 as the timely star. Star 8 is an earth star, associated with the Gen trigram, the mountain, the northeast, and in the traditional star lore with wealth and steadiness. The northeast was the favored direction of the era. Practitioners placed weight on the mountain star 8 and water star 8 in natal charts, and the standard advice of the period leaned toward the northeast sector.
On February 4, 2024, that reading expired. Star 8 did not vanish from anyone chart, but its status changed from timely to retreating. The tradition has a precise vocabulary for this. A timely star (dang ling) carries the period own energy and is read as easy to work with. A retreating star carries the last period energy and is read as fading: still present, still meaningful where it lands, but no longer the star that defines the era. Ahead of the timely star sits the rising star (sheng qi, growing energy): the star of the coming period, gaining strength. In Period 9, that is star 1, which will rule the next Period 1 beginning in 2044.
So the handover, in one line: 8 steps down, 9 takes the seat, 1 waits in the wings. Every natal chart drawn before 2024 is now read with new weights, and the rooms that matter most in a house may have moved.
Star 9, the ruler of the era
The new ruler is star 9, called the Purple Star or You Bi, the Right Assistant. It is a fire star. Its trigram is Li, written ☲: two solid yang lines with a broken yin line between them, the image of a flame that is bright outside and hollow inside. Its direction is the south. Its family member in the traditional correspondences is the middle daughter. Its body associations, in the star lore recorded on the Wikipedia page, are the heart, the blood, the eyes, the tongue.
In the traditional reading, a timely star 9 carries celebration and visibility. The star lore gives it promotion, marriage, happy occasions, recognition, things coming to light. One practitioner source describes the Li trigram period as an era of illumination: things that were hidden get exposed, surfaces and presentation gain weight, passion and emotional life run hotter. None of this is a forecast about any person. It is the symbolic vocabulary the system uses for fire: what fire does is burn bright, move fast, and make things visible.
What practitioners do with a timely star is positional. They want the active, used parts of a home, the main door, the living room, the study, the bedroom, to sit in or face palaces where star 9 lands well in the natal chart. The lighting guide on this site covers the fire element at the room level: brightness, warmth of light, the south side of rooms. Period 9 is that logic scaled up to twenty years.
There is a subtlety worth stating because beginners miss it. Star 9 being timely does not make the number 9 lucky, and it does not make every south room good. Timeliness is a property of stars in palaces in specific charts, not a property of compass directions by themselves. The south is favored because the ruling star sits in the south palace of the Lo Shu, which brings us to the period own mountain-water rule.

Timely, rising, fading: the Period 9 star table
Here is how the nine stars are read for status in Period 9, in the standard teaching. The statuses follow the same scheme Wikipedia records for Period 8 (where 8 was timely and 9 and 1 were the growing stars), rolled one period forward, cross-checked against practitioner period-9 material read for this guide.
| Star | Traditional name | Element | Status in Period 9 | The traditional read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | You Bi, Right Assistant | Fire | Timely (dang ling) | The period own star. Read as the easiest star to work with; the one that carries the era energy. Celebration, visibility, recognition in the star lore. |
| 1 | Tan Lang, Greedy Wolf | Water | Rising (sheng qi) | The next period star, gaining strength. Read as the future prosperity star; practitioners already give it weight. Wisdom and scholarship in the lore. |
| 8 | Zuo Fu, Left Assistant | Earth | Fading | The last period ruler. Still present and usable where well placed, but read as past-prosperity energy, no longer the defining star. |
| 2 | Ju Men, Illness Door | Earth | Untimely | Traditionally the sickness star. In Period 9 some teachers read it as softened where it meets star 9, but the cautious reading keeps it quiet. |
| 3 | Lu Cun, Quarrel Star | Wood | Untimely | Traditionally quarrels and legal friction. Read as a star to keep calm rather than activate. |
| 4 | Wen Qu, Literary Star | Wood | Neutral to mildly favorable | The scholarship and romance star. Not timely, but traditionally the least troublesome of the untimely set; readers use it for studies where it lands well. |
| 5 | Lian Zhen, Misfortune Star | Earth | Untimely, heaviest | The heaviest star in the system in any period. Where it lands, annually or natally, the tradition says keep the sector quiet and undisturbed. |
| 6 | Wu Qu, Military Star | Metal | Neutral | Authority and leadership in the lore. Untimely but traditionally manageable; readers treat it as neutral ground. |
| 7 | Po Jun, Destruction Star | Metal | Untimely | Traditionally theft, gossip, and loss. Like star 2, some Period 9 teachers read it as modified by star 9 fire, but the standard advice is not to activate it. |
How to use this table: take a natal flying stars chart for a building, which the Flying Stars guide explains how to construct, and re-weight it. The palaces holding the natal mountain star 9 and water star 9 are the current prosperity markers of the chart. One practitioner discussion puts it plainly: for a Period 8 house living through Period 9, find its water 9 and mountain 9, because those are now the reigning stars for 2024 to 2043. The chart has not changed. The reading has.
A note on stars 2 and 7, because you will see disagreement. Some Period 9 teachers argue that star 9 fire transforms the earth of star 2 and the metal of star 7, softening their traditional edge. Others keep the cautious reading. This guide reports the disagreement without picking a winner, which is what the tradition itself does: schools differ, and careful readers say so.
Zheng Shen and Ling Shen: the period own mountain-water rule
Beyond the star-by-star reading, Period 9 carries its own landscape rule, called Zheng Shen and Ling Shen, the Direct Spirit and the Indirect Spirit. It comes from where the governing star sits on the Lo Shu.
In Period 8, the governing star 8 sat in the northeast palace. The northeast was Zheng Shen, the Direct Spirit, and the rule said: mountain there. The opposite palace, the southwest, was Ling Shen, the Indirect Spirit, and the rule said: water there. In Period 9, the governing star 9 sits in the south palace. So the south is Zheng Shen and wants mountain, and the north is Ling Shen and wants water. The practitioner site fengshuiweb.co.uk, read for this guide, states the Period 9 version directly: real water, road, or lower ground in the north; a mountain, building, trees, or a high fence in the south; and no water in the south from February 2024.
In a city apartment, mountain and water are translated, as the tradition has always translated them. The Wikipedia page records the standard urban readings: tall buildings and high furniture count as mountain; roads, low ground, and moving things count as water. So the Period 9 audit of a home asks: what is tall to the south of you, and what is low or moving to the north? A bookshelf wall on the south side of a room is a small mountain. A busy road to the north is a small river. The rule scales down without changing shape.
The same source applies the formula at the neighborhood level for anyone choosing where to live: an area with water to its north and hills or high ground to its south is read as prospering through 2044. And it adds the honest caveat the tradition always adds: this is one method among many, and a full reading takes the building period and facing into account. No single rule carries a whole assessment.
South-facing homes, and the honest limits
All of this makes the south the favored direction of the period, and you will see that claim everywhere in Period 9 material. A south-facing home, door in the south, main rooms opening south, is the textbook Period 9 setup. The tradition reasons it out cleanly: the ruling star sits south, the Li trigram governs south, the Direct Spirit wants height south.
Here are the limits, stated plainly because the tradition states them.
First, facing is one input. The front door direction guide on this site covers how facing is actually measured: the most yang side of the building, and for apartments, the facing of the whole building rather than the unit door. A south-facing label on a listing does not automatically mean the chart reads well.
Second, the natal chart can override the compass. A north-facing Period 9 house whose facing and sitting stars place timely 9s and 1s in its main rooms reads well in the tradition. A south-facing house whose main door lands in a palace with an untimely 5 or 2 does not get a pass because of its orientation. The stars are the reading; the direction is the context.
Third, the form school still applies underneath everything. A south-facing home at the end of a T-junction, under a crushing overhead beam, or with the bed in the doorway fails the form reading before the period reading begins. The command position guide and the bagua room-by-room guide cover those layers. Period 9 changes the weights, not the foundations.
Fourth, the annual layer still turns every Li Chun. The annual afflictions guide tracks where Tai Sui, San Sha, and the Five Yellow sit each year. Those yearly positions can make the south, the favored direction of the era, a sector to leave alone in a given year: in 2026, for example, the Five Yellow sits in the south. The twenty-year reading and the one-year reading stack. They do not cancel each other.
What Period 9 does not change
It is easy to treat a period change as a renovation order. The tradition does not. Here is what stays put.
Your home period is fixed at construction and first occupation. A Period 8 house is a Period 8 house until it is rebuilt or gutted to the structure. The Eight Mansions guide house-gua method does not change with the period either; a gua is computed from birth year and sitting direction, and the wandering stars keep their meanings. The kua number guide directions do not move. Command position does not move. The five-element cycles in the balancing guide do not move.
What changes is emphasis. Rooms you already use gain or lose weight in the reading. A study in a palace with the natal water star 9, unremarkable in 2020, is now the room the tradition would point to first. A bedroom under a fading star 8 that carried the last era is now read as yesterday energy: not bad, just no longer the lead. The period is a re-weighting, and a re-weighting is a good reason to look at your floor plan again, not a reason to rebuild it.
A simple Period 9 home audit
If you want to apply this to your own place, here is the sequence teachers suggest, in order. It takes an afternoon, a compass, and your floor plan. The compass reading guide covers the measuring technique.
Step 1: Confirm your home period. Find the year construction finished and the home was first occupied. Before February 4, 2004: Period 7 or earlier. February 4, 2004 to February 3, 2024: Period 8. From February 4, 2024: Period 9. January and early February completions need the exact Li Chun date of that year.
Step 2: Find your natal 9s. If you have a natal flying stars chart, locate the mountain star 9 and the water star 9. Note which rooms they fall in. Those are the palaces the current period reads as prosperity markers. If you do not have a natal chart, this is the step that needs a practitioner or the chart-construction method in the Flying Stars guide; do not guess the numbers.
Step 3: Check south and north. Stand at the center of your home with the compass. What is the tallest, most solid thing to your south, inside or outside? What is the lowest or most moving thing to your north? You are checking the Zheng Shen and Ling Shen pattern: height south, openness north. Inside a room, a tall bookcase on the south wall and a clear, low north side approximates it.
Step 4: Map your hours. List where you spend the most waking hours: desk, bed, stove, main chair. Compare those spots against the timely stars from the table above and your natal 9s. The tradition cares most about the places you actually occupy. A timely star in a storage room counts for little.
Step 5: Check the annual layer. Each Li Chun, note where the annual stars and the yearly afflictions land, and adjust the noisy decisions: which room gets the renovation, which sector stays quiet. The annual afflictions guide tracks this year by year.
Renters do the same audit with one difference: you cannot change the building period or the landscape, so steps 3 and 4 carry the weight. Choose the bedroom and desk position inside the unit using the timely stars, and leave the structure alone.
Limits, stated plainly
This system is a cultural framework for reading space, not a measurement of it. Nothing in it predicts what will happen to any household, and nothing in this guide promises outcomes. The star lore describes tendencies in a symbolic language: fire means visibility the way water means flow, because that is what the elements do in nature. A reader who tells you a room guarantees promotion is not describing the tradition; the tradition describes patterns and leaves people to live their lives.
Money, health, legal, and property decisions belong to professionals, documents, and numbers that can be checked. Use the period reading the way its teachers intend it: as one lens on a home, stacked with the form school, the natal chart, and the annual layer, and set down whenever a real decision needs real evidence.
